Many herbs and simple natural remedies are quite effective in the treatment of stomach pain and to help relieve indigestion.

There are many varieties of stomach pain, and as many ways to deal with them as there are people. This article will look at a few simple, natural alternatives to soothe indigestion and related pains.

Ginger

Perhaps the most useful herbal stomach pain remedy. It works in several different ways; it reduces irritation of the stomach and intestines (including the kind of irritation that causes hiccups, interestingly), it dispels gas, promotes more complete digestion, and helps move food through the digestive tract. It also greatly reduces nausea, making it effective for an even wider range of complaints, including morning sickness and motion sickness. Can be used effectively in capsule supplement form, or as a tea.

Licorice

Licorice is one of the oldest and best-known herbal indigestion and stomach pain remedies. According to Prescription for Herbal Healing by Phyllis A. Balch, CNC, "Licorice soothes inflammation and protects the stomach and intestines from the effects of stomach acid. One of its components, glycyrrhizinic acid, was the first compound proven to promote the healing of ulcers." Unlike drugs that reduce stomach acid production, negatively impacting digestion, it increases the protective mucous coating, as well as circulation to the intestine walls.

Fennel

The seeds of this plant help stimulate proper digestion, and relieves gas and gas-buildup related pains. One interesting (and tasty!) way to effectively use these seeds is to add them to dishes with hard-to-digest or gas-inducing foods like cabbage.

Chamomile

Arguably the most pleasant of the herbs listed here, chamomile is very soothing to the stomach, helps to dispel gas, and relaxes the muscles that move food through the intestines. Most commonly used as a tea, tincture of chamomile is perhaps even more effective.

Turmeric

Aids proper digestion and soothes stomach irritation. To use, mix 1 teaspoon in 1 cup of cold water and drink. (No guarantees on the taste.)

Peppermint

Cooling and soothing, peppermint is a stronger muscle relaxer, and can calm an overactive digestive system. However, because it is such a strong muscle relaxant, it should not be used by heartburn sufferers, as it can relax the muscle between the stomach and esophagus so much that heartburn may get worse instead of better.

Essential Oil Blend

  • Coriander
  • Cardamom
  • Dill

Add a total of 3 drops of any/all of these essential oils to 1 tablespoon of honey. Use no more than ½ teaspoon of this honey in a cup of warmed milk per day.

The same oil blend can be mixed with a carrier oil and used topically on the stomach for more immediate stomach pains.

Sleeping Position for Heartburn

Believe it or not, the position in which one sleeps can affect heartburn. The lower esophagus is curved slightly, and sleeping on the right side can cause gravity to straighten out this curve, raising the potential for stomach acid to spill into the esophagus, causing heartburn. Heartburn sufferers should try to sleep on their left sides as often as possible.

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

For indigestion of various types, baking soda can prove very useful. This includes ulcers that are painful. To use, dissolve 1-2 teaspoons in cold water and drink. It should not be used if you have heart problems, liver or kidney disease, or internal bleeding.
